About This Book
Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi's second novel follows Kirabo, a young woman coming of age in 1970s rural Uganda, who seeks the secret knowledge of Nnambi — the First Woman — from women healers. Set in a richly imagined Ganda community, the novel is a feminist reimagining of Ganda oral tradition and a powerful account of female knowledge and resistance. It won the Jhalak Prize in 2021.
