Philip Milton Roth (1933-2018) was an American novelist and short-story writer, born in Newark, New Jersey, renowned for his intensely autobiographical fiction exploring Jewish-American identity, sexuality, and the American experience. Notable works include Goodbye, Columbus, Portnoy's Complaint, and his Pulitzer Prize-winning American Pastoral, the first of his American Trilogy. He received numerous accolades, including two National Book Awards, the Pulitzer Prize, three PEN/Faulkner Awards, and the Man Booker International Prize.
