About the Author

Elizabeth Foreman Lewis (1892–1958) was an American children's author whose works were inspired by her years as a Methodist missionary and educator in China. Her most notable book, Young Fu of the Upper Yangtze (1932), won the 1933 Newbery Medal and the 1960 Lewis Carroll Shelf Award, praised for its strong characterizations and vivid depictions of Chinese life. Other major works include Ho-Ming, Girl of New China (1934) and To Beat a Tiger, One Needs a Brother's Help (1956).
