What the Dead Remember

Harlan Greene (born June 19, 1953) is an American novelist, historian, and archivist whose works center on Charleston, South Carolina, exploring themes of homosexuality, Jewish identity, and local history. His notable novels include the cult classic Why We Never Danced the Charleston (1984), What the Dead Remember (1991, winner of the Lambda Literary Award for Gay Men's Fiction), and The German Officer's Boy (2005, Lambda nominee); he has also authored acclaimed nonfiction such as Mr. Skylark: John Bennett and the Charleston Renaissance (2001) and The Real Rainbow Row (2022).
