Irene Hunt (1902-2001) was an American children's author renowned for her historical novels, debuting at age 61 with the Newbery Honor-winning Across Five Aprils (1964), inspired by her grandfather's Civil War stories, followed by the Newbery Medal-winning Up a Road Slowly (1967). She taught English, French, and psychology before retiring to write full-time, with other notable works including No Promises in the Wind and The Lottery Rose, and was a 1974 U.S. nominee for the Hans Christian Andersen Award.
