Mark Behr (1963-2015) was a Tanzanian-born South African novelist, shortlisted for major literary awards and professor of English literature at Rhodes College. His notable works include The Smell of Apples (1995), which won the M-Net Award, Eugene Marais Award, CNA Debut Award, Betty Trask Award, and the Los Angeles Times Art Seidenbaum Award; Embrace (2000), shortlisted for the Sunday Times Fiction Prize and Encore Award; and Kings of the Water (2009). His writing explored themes of violence, racism, nationalism, militarization, masculinity, and colonialism, translated into ten languages.
