John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892–1973) was an English author and philologist best known for his high fantasy novels The Hobbit (1937) and The Lord of the Rings (1954–55), which together with The Silmarillion form a connected legendarium of Middle-earth. Estate. A scholar of Old and Middle English at Oxford University, he pioneered modern fantasy literature and received the CBE in 1972.
