Adele Wiseman (1928-1992) was a Canadian author of Russian-Jewish descent born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, best known for her novels exploring Jewish immigrant experiences, the Great Depression, World War II, and acculturation challenges in Canada. Starters. Her debut novel The Sacrifice (1956) won the Governor General's Award for English-language fiction, Canada's highest literary honor, while her second novel Crackpot (1974) earned the Canadian Booksellers Association Book Award; she also received fellowships like Guggenheim (1958) and wrote plays, children's books, essays, and memoirs.
