Gail E. Haley (born November 4, 1939, in Charlotte, North Carolina) is an American author and illustrator of children's picture books, renowned for retelling folktales and historical fiction. She won the 1971 Caldecott Medal for her retelling of the African folktale A Story a Story and the 1976 Kate Greenaway Medal for The Post Office Cat, making her the only illustrator to receive both top American and British awards for children's book illustration.
