Bharati Mukherjee (1940-2017) was an Indian-born American novelist and short-story writer whose works explored the immigrant experience, cultural clashes, and transformation in America. Notable works include the novels Jasmine (1989) and The Holder of the World (1993), and the short story collection The Middleman and Other Stories (1988), which won the National Book Critics Circle Award. She taught at the University of California, Berkeley, and identified as an American writer.
