Nelson Algren (1909-1981) was an American author renowned for his gritty realist novels depicting the underbelly of Chicago, including his most famous work, The Man with the Golden Arm (1949), which won the National Book Award for Fiction, as well as A Walk on the Wild Side (1956) and Never Come Morning (1942).
