About the Author

Octavio Paz (1914–1998) was a Mexican poet, essayist, philosopher, and diplomat who published his first poems as a teenager and founded several literary journals. He served in the Mexican diplomatic service, including as ambassador to India, but resigned in 1968 in protest against the Tlatelolco massacre, later editing influential magazines like Plural and Vuelta. His works explore Mexican identity, surrealism, love, time, and politics, earning him the 1990 Nobel Prize in Literature.
