John le Carré (born David John Moore Cornwell, 1931–2020) was a British author renowned for his espionage novels, including masterpieces like The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1963), Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1974), and the Karla trilogy featuring George Smiley. Drawing from his experience in MI5 and MI6, he crafted morally complex spy thrillers that redefined the genre, earning awards such as the Mystery Writers of America Edgar Award, Crime Writers' Association Gold Dagger (twice), and the Olof Palme Prize. He acquired Irish citizenship late in life due to disillusionment with Brexit but is primarily recognized as British.
