Merle Eugene Curti (1897-1996) was an American historian renowned for pioneering work in intellectual history, social history, and peace studies, serving as Frederick Jackson Turner Professor at the University of Wisconsin and directing 86 Ph.D. dissertations. His most notable works include The Growth of American Thought (1943), which won the Pulitzer Prize for History, The Making of an American Community (1959), and The Roots of American Loyalty (1946); he also led the American Historical Association as president in 1954.
