The Family from One End Street

Eve Garnett (1900-1991) was an English writer and illustrator best known for her pioneering children's novel The Family from One End Street (1937), which depicted working-class life and won the Carnegie Medal, beating J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. Motivated by poverty she witnessed while illustrating The London Child (1927), she self-illustrated all her seven books, including sequels Further Adventures of the Family from One End Street (1956) and Holiday at the Dew Drop Inn (1962), and traveled extensively, crossing the Arctic Circle 16 times.
