Margaret Rumer Godden (1907–1998) was a prolific British author renowned for over 60 fiction and nonfiction books, many inspired by her childhood in colonial India and experiences running a dance school there. Notable works include the bestseller Black Narcissus (1939), adapted into a classic film, The River (1946), In This House of Brede (1969), and the Whitbread Award-winning children's novel The Diddakoi (1972).
