Ivo Andrić (1892–1975) was a Yugoslav novelist, poet, and short story writer born in Bosnia, who studied philosophy and worked in the diplomatic service of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia before devoting himself to writing during World War II. He is best known for novels chronicling life in Ottoman Bosnia, including his magnum opus Na Drini ćuprija (The Bridge on the Drina). In 1961, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for the epic force with which he traced themes and depicted human destinies from his country's history.
