Faith Ringgold (1930–2024) was an American artist, author, and activist renowned for her narrative story quilts and children's books addressing race, gender, and Black American experiences, with notable works including the quilt Tar Beach (1988), its adaptation into the award-winning book Tar Beach (1991; Caldecott Honor, Coretta Scott King Award), Aunt Harriet’s Underground Railroad in the Sky (1992), and Who's Afraid of Aunt Jemima? (1983). She authored and illustrated 17 children's books and over a dozen story quilts, advocated for Black and women artists, and received over 75 awards including 23 honorary doctorates.
