About the Author

Jamake Highwater, born Jackie Marks (February 13, 1931 – June 3, 2001), was an American writer of Eastern European Jewish ancestry who falsely claimed Cherokee heritage and authored over 30 books on Native American themes, music, art, and history. His most notable works include the Newbery Honor-winning children's novel Anpao: An American Indian Odyssey (1973) and The Primal Mind: Vision and Reality in Indian America (1981), which inspired a PBS documentary he hosted; however, he was exposed as a cultural impostor in 1984.
