Stephen GammellAmerican
Stephen Gammell (born 1943) is an American illustrator of children's books who debuted in 1973 with A Nutty Business by Ida Chittum. He won the 1989 Caldecott Medal for Song and Dance Man by Karen Ackerman and received Caldecott Honors for Where the Buffaloes Begin (1981) and The Relatives Came (1986), while illustrating nearly 70 books, including nine he authored himself. He is most famous for his surreal, nightmarish illustrations in Alvin Schwartz's Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark trilogy. Read more →
