Mikal Gilmore (born February 9, 1951) is an American writer and music journalist best known for his memoir Shot in the Heart (1994), which chronicles his troubled family and brother Gary Gilmore's execution and won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and National Book Critics Circle Award. He has written influential music criticism for Rolling Stone since the 1970s and authored notable works like Night Beat: A Shadow History of Rock and Roll (1999) and Stories Done: Writings on the 1960s and its Discontents (2009).
