Maia WojciechowskaPolish-American
Maia Wojciechowska (1927–2002) was a Polish-American author best known for her children's and young adult fiction, including the Newbery Medal-winning Shadow of a Bull (1964), which also earned the Deutscher Jugendbuchpreis in its German edition, and other notable works like Tuned Out (1968) and The Rotten Years (1971). Born in Warsaw, Poland, she emigrated to the United States in 1942, wrote under the name Maia Rodman early in her career, and explored themes of identity, pressure, and courage in her stories.
