Robert Polito was born in Boston, Massachusetts on October 27, 1951. He earned his BA from Boston College and MA/PhD from Harvard University, and has taught at institutions including Harvard, NYU, and the New School, where he founded the Graduate Creative Writing Program. A poet, biographer, critic, and editor, his notable works include the poetry collections Doubles (1995) and Hollywood & God (2009), and the award-winning biography Savage Art: A Biography of Jim Thompson (1995), for which he received the National Book Critics Circle Award.
