About This Book
In a decaying Hungarian collective farm at the end of the communist era, the inhabitants are waiting for a charismatic trickster named Irimiás—who is supposed to be dead—to return and transform their lives. Written in long, spiralling sentences, Satantango (adapted into a seven-hour film by Béla Tarr) is Krasznahorkai's most celebrated novel.
About the Author
László Krasznahorkai is a Hungarian novelist, screenwriter, and writer born on January 5, 1954, in Gyula, eastern Hungary. He studied law briefly before switching to Hungarian literature at Eötvös Loránd University, graduating in 1983. His debut novel Sátántangó (Satantango, 1985) marked his rise as a leading figure in Hungarian literature, known for its dense, postmodern style exploring dystopian and melancholic themes.
