Kōbō Abe (1924-1993), a Japanese writer often compared to Franz Kafka, was renowned for his surreal, modernist explorations of alienation and identity, with notable works including The Woman in the Dunes (1962, Yomiuri Prize), The Face of Another (1964), and The Box Man (1973).
