William Andrew Murray Boyd CBE FRSL (born 7 March 1952) is a British novelist, short story writer, screenwriter, and film director best known for novels including A Good Man in Africa (1981, Whitbread Award winner), Any Human Heart (2002), Restless (2006, Costa Novel of the Year), and the James Bond novel Solo (2013). Born in Accra, Ghana, to Scottish parents, he spent his early years in Ghana and Nigeria before studying in Scotland, France, and the UK, later lecturing at Oxford. His career highlights include numerous literary awards, screenplays for films like Chaplin (1992), and appointment as Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2005 for services to literature.
