About the Author

Marc Bernard (1900-1983) was a French novelist born into a working-class family in Nîmes, who worked as a delivery boy and metalworker before publishing his surrealist-inspired debut novel Zig-zag in 1929. He gained prominence with major awards including the Prix Interallié in 1934 for Anny and the Prix Goncourt in 1942 for Pareils à des enfants, and later received the Grand Prix Poncetton in 1970 for his body of work; he founded the Group of Working-Class Writers in 1932 and contributed to pro-communist publications.
