About the Author

John Carl Schoenherr (1935–2010) was an American illustrator renowned for his science fiction artwork, particularly the original illustrations for Frank Herbert's Dune series including the 1965 dust jacket and The Illustrated Dune (1978), and for children's books such as Owl Moon by Jane Yolen. He won the 1965 Hugo Award for Best Professional Artist and the 1988 Caldecott Medal for Owl Moon, and was posthumously inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame in 2015. Specializing in scratchboard techniques and wildlife art, he illustrated over 40 children's books and contributed to Analog magazine covers that influenced designs like Chewbacca in Star Wars.
