Only Yesterday

Shmuel Yosef Agnon (1888-1970) was an Israeli novelist born in Buczacz, Eastern Galicia (now Ukraine), who became a central figure in modern Hebrew literature. His notable works include The Bridal Canopy, A Guest for the Night, and his masterpiece Only Yesterday, exploring tensions between traditional Jewish life and modernity. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1966 for his profoundly characteristic narrative art with motifs from Jewish life.
