Joseph LelyveldAmerican
Joseph Salem Lelyveld (1937–2024) was an American journalist and author who spent nearly 40 years at The New York Times, rising to executive editor from 1994 to 2001, and winning the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction in 1986 for his book Move Your Shadow: South Africa, Black and White. His other notable works include Great Soul: Mahatma Gandhi and His Struggle with India (2011) and His Final Battle: The Last Months of Franklin Roosevelt (2016). He died from complications of Parkinson's disease at age 86.
