Ludwig Bemelmans (1898-1962) was an Austrian-American author and illustrator best known for his Madeline series of children's picture books, beginning with Madeline in 1939, with sequels including the Caldecott Medal-winning Madeline's Rescue (1953), Madeline and the Bad Hat (1956), and Madeline and the Gypsies (1959). He also wrote acclaimed adult novels like Hotel Splendide and humorous memoirs, and created famous murals such as those in New York’s Carlyle Hotel bar.
