Eva Hoffman, born Ewa Wydra in Kraków, Poland in 1945 to Holocaust survivors, emigrated to North America at age 13 and later studied at Harvard, earning a Ph.D. in 1975. She gained international acclaim as a writer and academic for her memoir Lost in Translation (1989) on her immigrant experience, along with works on Eastern Europe, the Holocaust legacy, and novels, receiving awards like the Guggenheim Fellowship and Jean Stein Award.
