Los mares del Sur

Manuel Vázquez Montalbán (1939-2003) was a prolific Spanish writer, journalist, poet, and essayist from Barcelona, best known for his detective novels featuring the gastronome-investigator Pepe Carvalho, including Los mares del Sur (1979, Planeta Award) and Galíndez (1991, National Narrative Award). A vocal critic of the Franco regime who served 18 months in prison for political activism, he blended crime fiction with sharp social and political commentary, earning accolades like the Premio Internacional de Literatura Ennio Flaiano for Autobiografía del general Franco (1994) and influencing global literature through translations and adaptations.
