Mario Vargas Llosa (1936–2025) was a Peruvian novelist, journalist, essayist, and politician, widely regarded as one of the most influential writers of the Latin American Boom generation. Born on March 28, 1936, in Arequipa, Peru, he rose to international prominence in the 1960s with novels drawing from his experiences at a military academy and his engagement with Peruvian society.
