Yann Martel (born June 25, 1963) is a Canadian author best known for his Man Booker Prize-winning novel Life of Pi (2001), an international bestseller that sold over 12 million copies and was adapted into an Academy Award-winning film. Born in Salamanca, Spain, to French-Canadian parents in the foreign service, he grew up internationally before studying philosophy at Trent University and working odd jobs while developing his writing career. His other notable works include the novels Beatrice and Virgil (2010), The High Mountains of Portugal (2016), and Self (1996), along with short story collections like The Facts Behind the Helsinki Roccamatios (1993), earning him awards such as the Companion of the Order of Canada.
