L'Epervier de Maheux

Jean Carrière (1928-2005) was a French novelist born in Nîmes, known for his evocative depictions of the Cévennes region, who began his writing career after working as secretary to Jean Giono and as a music critic and literary columnist. His most notable work, L'Épervier de Maheux (1972), won the prestigious Prix Goncourt, selling 2 million copies and translated into 15 languages, though its massive success led to personal depression following family tragedies. He published around twenty novels, including Retour à Uzès (1967, Prix Lucien-Tisserant), La Caverne des pestiférés (1978-1979), and Les Années sauvages (1986), while avoiding Paris literary circles after being labeled a regionalist.
