Le Bateau-refuge

Robert Francis (1901-1987) was an American poet born in Upland, Pennsylvania, who graduated from Harvard University and lived most of his life in Amherst, Massachusetts, where he built his home Fort Juniper. Mentored by Robert Frost, he published his first poetry collection Stand Here With Me in 1936 and notable works like The Orb Weaver (1960) and the poem “The Pitcher” (1953), earning the Shelley Memorial Award (1939) and Academy of American Poets award (1984); Frost called him America's best neglected poet.
