Guglielmo Petroni (1911-1993) was an Italian writer and painter born in Lucca into a poor family, becoming an autodidact after leaving school early to work in his father's shoe shop. His most notable works include Il mondo è una prigione (1949), a memoir of his WWII Resistance imprisonment and torture by the Nazis, and La morte del fiume (1974), for which he won the prestigious Premio Strega; he also received the Selezione Campiello for Il nome delle parole (1984) and other honors like the Premio Nazionale Prato.
