About the Author

Gonzalo Rojas Pizarro (1917–2011) was a Chilean poet whose work formed part of the Latin American avant-garde literary tradition of the twentieth century. Born in Lebu, Chile, he participated in the surrealist group Mandrágora, taught at universities across Chile, Germany, the US, Spain, and Mexico, and lived in exile following the 1973 Chilean coup. He received prestigious awards including the Cervantes Prize in 2003, the Chilean National Prize for Literature in 1992, and was regarded as one of Chile's greatest modern poets alongside Nicanor Parra.
