雁立 (Karitachi)

Motoyoshi Shimizu (清水基吉, August 31, 1918–March 30, 2008) was a Japanese novelist and poet active during the Shōwa and Heisei periods. Born in Shibuya, Tokyo, he studied under authors Riichi Yokomitsu and poet Ishida Hakyo, gaining early recognition with his debut Tsuru (“Crane”) in 1941 and winning the prestigious Akutagawa Prize in 1944 for Karitachi (“Wild Geese Standing”). Prolific in post-war literature and poetry criticism, he later served as director of the Kamakura Museum of Literature from 1991 to 2004 until his death from prostate cancer. Read more →
