About the Author

Jean Cayrol (1911-2005) was a French poet, novelist, and screenwriter profoundly shaped by his experiences in the French Resistance and imprisonment at Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp during World War II. He is best known for his poetry collection Poèmes de la nuit et du brouillard (1946), the narration for Alain Resnais's documentary Night and Fog (1956), and his Prix Renaudot-winning novel Je vivrai l'amour des autres (1947), along with later works exploring themes of survival and estrangement; he was elected to the Académie Goncourt in 1974.
