About the Author

Dámaso Alonso (1898–1990) was a Spanish poet, philologist, and literary critic associated with the Generation of '27. Though his early poetry was imagistic, he is best known for his post-Civil War works like the anguished Hijos de la ira (1944), recognized as fundamental in post-war Spanish literature. He revolutionized the study of Spanish Baroque poetry, particularly Góngora, served as director of the Real Academia Española (1968–1982), and received the Premio Cervantes in 1978.
