Paul Horgan (1903-1995) was an American author renowned for his historical fiction and non-fiction focused on the Southwestern United States, winning two Pulitzer Prizes for History for Great River: The Rio Grande in North American History (1955) and Lamy of Santa Fe (1975), along with the Bancroft Prize for the former. Notable works also include the novels A Distant Trumpet and Whitewater. Born in Buffalo, New York, he moved to New Mexico as a youth, served in World War II reaching lieutenant colonel, and later became a prominent figure at Wesleyan University.
