Assia Djebar (born Fatima-Zohra Imalayen) was an Algerian novelist, translator, and filmmaker born in 1936 in Cherchell, Algeria, best known for her feminist works exploring women's obstacles in Algerian society, anti-colonialism, and anti-patriarchy. She authored numerous novels including her debut La Soif (1957), won the Neustadt International Prize in 1996, and became the first North African writer elected to the Académie française in 2005. Djebar died in 2015 in Paris, France.
