Vollmann (born July 28, 1959, in Los Angeles) is an American author known for his ambitious novels, nonfiction, and journalism exploring themes of violence, history, and marginalized lives. He gained early experience as a war correspondent in Afghanistan and achieved major recognition with the 2005 National Book Award for Fiction for Europe Central; he lives in Sacramento and was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2025.
