James Henry Daugherty (1889–1974) was an American modernist painter, muralist, and children's book author-illustrator born in Asheville, North Carolina. He is best known for his book Daniel Boone, which won the Newbery Medal in 1940, and Gillespie and the Guards, a Caldecott Honor book in 1957.
