Alan Paton (1903-1988) was a South African author and anti-apartheid activist, best known for his novel Cry, the Beloved Country (1948), which brought international attention to racial injustice and apartheid, along with other notable works like Too Late the Phalarope (1953) and Ah, but Your Land Is Beautiful (1981). He received the Freedom Award in 1960, served as president of the Liberal Party of South Africa, and was posthumously awarded the Order of Ikhamanga in Gold in 2006 for his literary contributions against oppression.
