José María GironellaSpanish
José María Gironella (1917-2003) was a Spanish novelist from Catalonia best known for his Civil War trilogy The Cypresses Believe in God (1953), One Million Dead (1961), and Peace After War (1966), which offered a nonpartisan portrayal of Spain's turmoil and won the National Prize for Literature for the first volume; his debut novel Where the Soil Was Shallow (1946) earned the Nadal Prize.
