Kamau Brathwaite (1930-2020) was a Barbadian poet and scholar renowned for his innovative exploration of Caribbean identity, nation language, and African diaspora culture in works like The Arrivants: A New World Trilogy and Born to Slow Horses. He co-founded the Caribbean Artists Movement, taught at New York University as Professor Emeritus of Comparative Literature, and received major awards including the 1994 Neustadt International Prize for Literature and the 2006 Griffin Poetry Prize.
