Mark Strand (1934-2014) was a Canadian-born American poet, essayist, and translator, best known for his surrealistic poetry exploring themes of self and the external world, including notable works like Blizzard of One (1999, Pulitzer Prize), The Continuous Life (1990), and Dark Harbor (1993). He served as U.S. Poet Laureate (1990-1991), received the Bollingen Prize, MacArthur Fellowship, Wallace Stevens Award, and Gold Medal in Poetry from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
